It's that time again, folks... Happy holidays!
Eskom confirmed on Friday evening, 11 December 2020, that it would be implementing Stage 2 load shedding over the weekend. The power utility said in a statement that it “regrets” having to implement power cuts.
LOAD SHEDDING UPDATE: 12 AND 13 DECEMBER
As per the statement, load shedding will start at 6:00 and continue until 23:00 on Saturday. It will be repeated on Sunday due to the “system being severely constrained”.
Well, we have confirmation now, for what it is worth. The power utility said it needs to implement load shedding “in order to replenish the depleted emergency generation reserves for the coming week”.
In addition, Eskom has also been dealing with a “large number of unforseen breakdowns from the ageing, unreliable power plants over the past few days”, and has taken two generation offline at Camden Power Station.
“We currently have 7 452 MW on planned maintenance, while another 10 208 MW of capacity is unavailable due to unplanned maintenance. Eskom teams are working around the clock to return as many of these units to service”.
LOAD SHEDDING FOREWARNED ON 10 DECEMBER
This follows after Eskom warned yesterday of the “high probability of load shedding on Thursday”. At the time, the power utility gave no indication as to when the lights may go out.
The power firm shared the bad news shortly after 17:30, and warned that generation units have been lost throughout the course of the day due to planned and unplanned maintenance:
“This capacity shortage has been caused by the loss of multiple generation units and high load losses, in addition to generation units that are already placed in planned maintenance.”
At the time, Eskom had 7 532 MW of power offline due to planned maintenance, while 10 853 MW had been lost as a result of unforeseen issues on Thursday, 10 December 2020.
An additional 18 000 MW off the grid teetered us the the edge of a fresh new set of power outages.
