Derek Hanekom has taken to social media to acknowledge Elon Musk becoming one of the richest men in the world.

The former minister and ANC veteran says that while he celebrates the SA-born man's success, it would be nice to see an investment in SA:

"Of course we celebrate his success. Now wouldn't it be wonderful if he ploughs back some of that wealth into the land of his birth!"

In response to a comment questioning if SA has the right to 'claim' Musk, Hanekom responded:

"Well, we don't have to claim him but he did spend the first 17 years of his life in SA. Either way, it would be great if at some point he does decide to invest in the country of his birth. And I do celebrate his success..."

Magnus Heystek, Director of Brenthurst Wealth Management, commented that he felt the notion was laughable:

"Ahh.."land of his birth". This is laughable. So that he can feed the ANC-gravy train filled with parasitic cadres. Musk is not stupid."

To this, Hanekom pointed out that SA is home to numerous successful brands, commenting that:

"I guess Toyota, Volkswagen, Amazon and all the other companies who have chosen to invest in SA are all stupid? Or does that title belong to you?"

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the year 2020 has been a lucrative one for the wealthiest people in the world.

According to Bloomberg, Musk now has a nett worth of $127.9 billion. This is largely due to the surge in Tesla's share price. The billionaire added $100.3 billion to his nett worth in 2020.

Gates, who is the co-founder of the Microsoft Corporation, has a nett worth of $127.7 billion. The figure would have been much higher if he hadn't been donating massively to charity over the years.

He was unseated as the world's richest man in 2017 by Jeff Bezos, who still maintains the position. Gates has given away more than $27 billion through his namesake foundation since 2006.
