The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has confirmed that Shepherd and his wife Mary Bushiri had opened up a case against police officials who had allegedly attempted to extort money from them in 2018 following allegations of fraud and theft that surfaced a few years ago.
Shepherd and Mary Bushiri fled South Africa less than a week after receiving bail from a Pretoria magistrate. According to Bushiri, who took to his Facebook page to share the news with his followers, he feared for the lives of his family.
Bushiri also claimed that he was avoiding attempts of extortion from corrupt police officials whom he had previously opened a case against after they allegedly threatened him if he refused to give them money.
According to a News24 article, IPID officials have said that Bushiri did not follow-up on the case he opened with them in 2018 after allegedly having no time to do so.
"The case was opened and there's been poor cooperation due to his busy schedule. This case is still waiting for him to provide more information to IPID," reports eNCA.
Ever since the news broke that Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary had broken their bail conditions and fled to Malawi, the media have been reporting on it constantly. Questions have been asked as to why the Malawian government has done nothing in the face of the flagrant violation of the law.
It is quite simple, a country has to request a citizen's extradition and Malawi cannot simply send the Bushiris back to South Africa. The Malawian government is waiting for the South African government to make a formal extradition request. The Malawian Information Minister Gospel Kazako said that until a formal request is made, his hands are tied, according to a report by eNCA.
"He is in this country and we are not hiding that. What we are saying here is, let us have formal and official contact. We know the treaties, we know the agreement, we know so many things that bind us together from South Africa, but we will not be dealing with this in an informal way."
