A visibly emotional Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Monday night - but the president cannot count on the sympathies of the EFF...
Cyril Ramaphosa appeared to be on the brink of tears during his address to the nation on Monday night. While pleading with his fellow citizens to obey the COVID-19 health protocols, the president placed South Africa back into Level 3 of lockdown. The EFF have welcomed the move – but didn’t care for the ANC leader’s emotional tone.
At the end of an exhausting, draining year for us all, even Cyril has started showing the strain. South Africa will enter the new year by taking two steps backwards, all while having to traverse these latest measures without the availability of alcohol: The third booze ban of the year came into force on Tuesday morning.
However, EFF National spokesperson, Vuyani Pambo, expressed little sympathy while reacting to Ramaphosa’s urgent address. He slammed the government for failing to act sooner against the second wave of coronavirus.
“He cannot act emotional. We are not children. We knew that this was coming and yet, the government failed to put measures in place to make sure the threat was dealt with.”Vuyani Pambo
EFF ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO REPORT ‘ILLEGAL LIQUOR VENDORS
The Red Berets went on to issue an official statement on Monday night, lamenting the abuse of alcohol as a leading factor in the mass defiance of current lockdown laws. The EFF is now encouraging citizens to report any person or outlet suspected of illegally distributing liquor while prohibition is in place.
“We welcome the stricter measures. The reality is that alcohol principally contributes to the defiance of measures aimed to combat the rapid spread of this virus. Under the influence of alcohol, people do not wear masks, they don’t sanitise, and they don’t maintain social distancing. The government, however, has failed to enforce its own regulations.”
“We call on members of the public to report and close retail outlets, inclusive of bottle stores, shebeens, and restaurants, that continue to trade and distribute alcohol outside of the regulations. There must be harsh consequences for those who engage in these unlawful activities. The people of South Africa must rise to defend our communities.”EFF statement
