The stricter adjustments come just 24 hours after more than 9 500 infections were chalked up on Sunday.
A teary-eyed President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation Monday, 28 December, literally begging South Africans to be responsible and to comply with coronavirus regulations as Covid-19 infections in the country hit the grim million mark milestone Sunday.
It was Ramaphosa’s third lockdown address in the past six weeks, and the President rang the changes once more with COVID-19 restrictions considerably tightened across the country.
The presidential announcement coincided with a statement from the health ministry stating that South Africa had registered 336 Covid-19 deaths in a 24 hour period, bringing the total coronavirus virus-related fatalities to 27 071.
The President announced that South Africa has returned to an ‘adjusted form’ of Level 3 lockdown restrictions, and the Presidency called on people to avoid closed spaces, crowded places, and close contact with others.
In the past month, transmission rates have skyrocketed, propelling the second wave of COVID-19 in Mzansi.
On social media, the feeling amongst most South Africans were that ‘we have been irresponsible’ as a nation and that the tighter restrictions were inevitable.
One netizen said South Africans are ‘paying the price’ for being irresponsible.
Another said she will be “calling out” those who are not complying with Covid-19 regulations.
Others tweeted that the solution lied with the ‘people’ who needed to “take responsibility for our actions”
Others said the enhanced lockdown affords time to self-reflect and work on personal development.
One Twitter user empathised with President Ramaphosa’s position.
Another said it’s time to ‘name and shame’ Covid-19 regulation offenders.
The most callous of all responses, perhaps, came from EFF National spokesperson, Vuyani Pambo, who tweeted: “He can’t act emotional, we are not children” – gives reaction after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address.
And then there were those just don’t give a damn… partying away as the President was addressing the nation.
