Cyril Ramaphosa, and his fellow ANC NEC members, have been accused of 'copying an old idea' - after they stated that SA would get a new state-owned company.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed that the ANC NEC will resolve to create a new pharmaceutical company – which is set to serve as another state-owned business. The proposal has been met with a raft of criticism, but some allegations are very much coming from left-field on Tuesday afternoon.

PROPOSALS FOR A NEW ‘STATE-OWNED COMPANY’ IN SOUTH AFRICA

Speaking during the conclusion of the NEC’s weekend gathering, Cyril Ramaphosa praised the robustness of discussions between party members with differing stances. It was in stark contrast to his tone on Monday, where the president forthrightly asked ‘what has happened’ to his party. But the head of state was all smiles when it came to the big reveal:

We have had to debate very difficult issues that had the potential to deepen divisions and tensions. Comrades were very frank and direct and tried to persuade each other through the strength of their arguments. The ANC NEC has resolved to form a state-owned pharmaceutical company.”

The NEC stressed that there can be no restraint from implementing these resolutions and we will be fair. There can be no retreat from this position. We must be even-handed.”Cyril Ramaphosa

RAMAPHOSA, ANC NEC ACCUSED OF ‘LIFTING’ OLD IDEAS

With several state-owned companies flailing beyond all hope, the creation of a new SOE already threatens to upset political opponents. But some eagle-eyed Parliamentarians have another problem with this proposal – and it’s plagiarism.

Ramaphosa has been accused of lifting an old policy – first drafted in 2007, then revisited in 2016 – while presenting it as a new outcome. The ANC NEC follows a joint decision-making process, so it’s not just Cyril who’s trying to recycle an idea, but the president sure is copping most of the heat: EFF Deputy Floyd Shivambu is leading the voices of discontent.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO KETLAPHELA? SA’S OTHER PROPOSED STATE-OWNED PHARMACEUTICAL BUSINESS…

The government’s last official statement on a state-owned pharmaceutical company was made almost five years ago. Back then, Jacob Zuma was the president – and a certain Cyril Ramaphosa was praised for his ‘contribution’ to the project:

I am happy to announce that the state-owned pharmaceutical company, Ketlaphela, has been established. The company will participate in the supply of anti-retroviral drugs to the Department of Health from the 2016/17 financial year,”

We acknowledge the contribution of partners at The South African National Aids Council [SANAC], which [was] chaired by Cyril Ramaphosa. We must now launch a major campaign in this regard.”
