Community members alerted the police after the grim discovery.

Police in Port Elizabeth have arrested a 27-year-old man after the charred remains of a woman was found in Gelvandale early on Sunday morning.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said members of the community alerted police after the grim discovery on Van Duuren Street just before 6 am.

She said the identity of the woman has yet to be confirmed, but added that a 21-year-old woman was reported missing Sunday morning.

Naidu said members of the Anti-Gang Unit who were on patrol were informed by a taxi driver about a man walking without a shirt with scratch marks on his body, adding that the clothes he had on were bloodied.

The man was arrested and detained on a charge of murder and rape.

The investigation is ongoing but the suspect is expected to appear in the Gelvandale magistrates’ court on Tuesday.

HUMANSDORP MURDER

Meanwhile, a 33-year-old man is due to appear in court in Humansdorp on Monday for the murder of his heavily pregnant wife.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the suspect was arrested on the scene Friday morning on the N2 at the Gamtoos River bridge.

She said a truck driver was traveling from Port Elizabeth to Jeffreys Bay when he saw a blue sedan in the middle of the road with both front doors open.

TRACES OF BLOOD

Govender said the truck driver stopped to investigate and saw no one, but called the police after noticing traces of blood.

She said officers immediately responded and the woman’s body was found in the bushes and the suspect arrested.

She was said to be about eight months pregnant.
