ANC heavyweight Deshi Ngxanga is testing the waters in Orania this week - after revealing that he has applied to move to the town.

ANC Northern Cape provincial secretary Deshi Ngxanga has made a very rare and unlikely application this week. The party official has inquired about buying any available land plots in Orania, arguing that the laws of South Africa allow him to reside anywhere in the country – even if that’s in a ‘whites-only’ town.

ANC OFFICIAL APPLIES TO LIVE IN ORANIA

Orania has been in existence for the best part of three decades. It has gained global notoriety for its solely Afrikaner population and often finds itself at the centre of discussions relating to racial harmony in South Africa. A few thousand people live, work and exist peacefully in the town – but its very existence can be classed as a sore spot for many.

In Ngxanga’s book, Orania doesn’t sit well with him – and he’s decided to do something about it. The provincial secretary wants to move to the enclave, and exercise his basic right to freedom. In an email he shared on his social media pages, the politician states that he would like to build his own house in this racially-exclusive setting.

WHAT ARE THE RULES FOR LIVING IN ORANIA?

And if his application fails? Well, Deshi has a plan for that too: He’s got his lawyers on standby, to anticipate any rejections on the grounds of race – and he is prepared to take this issue to the Constitutional Court:

I am directing this letter to you to find out about possible residential plots that are available in Orania. The town forms part of South Africa and I guess it is open to people of all races who are interested in residing in the town.

Any citizen in South Africa has the right to enter, remain, and reside anywhere in the republic… Please let me know of any available plots and the cost. I am interested in building my house and relocating to Orania. I’m also copying my lawyers so that we can initiate a legal challenge if I’m declined residency on the basis of the colour of my skin.”Deshi Ngxanga

DESHI NGXANGA’S OUTRAGEOUS APPLICATION

Ngxanga isn’t the only politician who has taken an exception to Orania and its existence. Panyaza Lesufi and Zamani Saul – two ANC heavyweights – have both suggested that ‘time us up’ for the isolated suburb. Meanwhile, Orania officials have denied receiving any official communications from Mr. Ngxanga, disputing his version of events.
