The NEC has called on members and leaders to refrain from actions such as burning ANC regalia because it is 'unbecoming to denigrate and desecrate ANC regalia.'

The ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) has condemned divisive statements from some of its leaders and members and the burning of ANC regalia.

In his closing remarks at the NEC meeting which sat from Sunday to Tuesday, ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa referred to an incident where party members burned a T-shirt bearing his face.

The incident happened during ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule’s appearance in court on corruption charges in November.

Some of Magashule’s supporters also called for Ramaphosa’s resignation.

‘UNBECOMING’

The NEC is correct in its condemnation, in the strongest terms, of the actions by some of our members and leaders who have been seen burning ANC regalia outside the court where the Secretary-General appeared in Mangaung, as well as inflammatory and divisive statements.”

The NEC has called on all members and leaders to exercise maximum discipline and to refrain from actions such as burning ANC regalia because it is unbecoming to denigrate and desecrate ANC regalia,” Ramaphosa added.

With regard to inflammatory statements, some ANC leaders have warned that removing Magashule from his position or arresting former President Jacob Zuma could cause civil unrest in South Africa.

Some of the leaders who have publicly made these statements include MKMVA leader Kebby Maphatsoe and former Nelson Mandela Bay ANC councilor Andile Lungisa.

In November, the chairperson of the state capture commission of inquiry, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, requested the inquiry to file a criminal complaint against Zuma.

This followed the former president’s decision to leave the inquiry without Zondo’s permission even though there was an active summons against him. Zuma’s supporters fear that this could lead to his arrest.

APPRECIATION FOR ZONDO

Reacting to the subsequent criticism against Zondo, Ramaphosa said, “The NEC agreed that we must affirm our appreciation of the work of the Zondo commission under very difficult circumstances.

We affirm our call to all members of our movement to cooperate with the commission and to refrain from unnecessary attacks on the Deputy Chief Justice and the work that he has been asked to do by the South African nation.”

Ramaphosa urged ANC leaders to desist from making public statements that are “at variance with our decisions” because this would fuel divisions in the party.
