Ramaphosa Praises ANC for Unity – 24 Hours After Slamming ‘Party Divisions’

Cyril Ramaphosa seems to be divided within his own mind when it comes to assessing unity within the ANC - and the president has flip-flopped on Tuesday.

We understand that being the ANC leader sometimes means you have to walk a tightrope. But on Tuesday, Cyril Ramaphosa decided to throw a juggling act into the mix. Perhaps the circus analogies are quite apt, all things considered – but the president is quite clearly divided over his own stance on ‘party unity’.

CYRIL RAMAPHOSA ON ANC UNITY – A TALE OF TWO DAYS

In his closing remarks at the latest ANC NEC gathering, Ramaphosa scoffed at critics who were expecting high drama. The president claimed that the ANC had been a big ‘happy family’ in the past 48 hours, despite condemning Ace Magashule to the ANC Integrity Commission, and venting his own fury on ‘unethical conduct’:

We have had to debate very difficult issues that had the potential to deepen divisions and tensions. Some expected punches and walk out. Sorry to disappoint you. We continue to forge unity and find one another. The discussions have been underpinned by the desire to find a solution to the challenges that face us.”

We have not torn each other apart, we have not sharpened divisions. We have narrowed down our differences. I wish to commend all members of the NEC for the comradely manner in which these discussions have taken place. Members have been frank and direct and have sought to persuade each other through the strength of their arguments.”The discussions have been underpinned by the desire to find a solution to the challenges that face us. Once again, we have proven many commentators and other public voices wrong.

We have not torn ourselves apart or descended into bitter recrimination.— Cyril Ramaphosa 🇿🇦 #StaySafe (@CyrilRamaphosa) December 8, 2020

ANC NEC MEETING CONCLUDES WITH CONTRADICTIONS

However, Tuesday’s salute to unity marks a different tone to the one struck just 24 hours previously. On Monday, Ramahphosa announced that unity ‘remained elusive’ amongst the party. It seems Cyril has fallen off the high-wire here – and no amount of diplomatic gymnastics can portray him as an untroubled ring-leader…

Despite numerous resolutions and repeated pronouncements, unity within our movement remains elusive. As has been the case for a long time, the divisions within our movement are most pronounced at a leadership level. Divisions are becoming more apparent and factions are emerging once again.”
