The 2020 Matric Exams have kicked off in South Africa on Thursday and the Department of Basic Education has already pulled a u-turn. After previously warning against testing positive, the Department says that it has reached an 'agreement' in order to allow infected students to write their year-end exams:
"Learners who have tested positive for Covid-19 will be allowed to write their matric examinations in isolation under strict health protocols as stipulated by the National Department of Health."
Learners who have tested positive for the virus will now be subjected to strict regulations as stipulated by the Health Ministry:
"Learners who have tested positive for Covid-19 will be allowed to write their matric examinations in isolation under strict health protocols as stipulated by the National Department of Health."
Any student who tests positive ahead of an exam will be barred from writing but the Department is determined to take it even further.
Students who test positive during the mean will not be allowed to finish writing their exam. Students who test positive, according to the Department, will need to wait until mid-2021 to write again:
"If you cannot write or complete your 2020 examinations because of a positive Covid-19 diagnosis you have an opportunity to write in May/June 2021. The May/June examination will be open for anyone to write selected subjects or all subjects."
