Police have confirmed that the suspects that engaged in a shootout in Kempton Park are also suspected of involvement in the death of the guards.

After a deadly shootout in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, on Tuesday 8 December, police have apprehended a suspect believed to be involved in the murder of three security guards found dead in a bakkie in the area.

The dramatic shootout that ensued when police chased down three vehicles left two of the suspects dead and a third under police custody recovering from injuries at a nearby hospital. The group got embroiled in a high-speed chase before being tremendously outnumbered by law officials, and once the suspects opened fire, SAPS responded with their own devastating lethal force.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele said that the investigation into the murder of the three security guards remains underway, and said that the driver of the vehicle they were found in is in serous condition in hospital.

The deceased were found shot and killed in a white Toyota bakkie belonging to a security company,” he said. “Police on Tuesday afternoon responded to a complaint of a shooting in progress between police and armed suspects believed to be behind the earlier fatal shooting of the three security officers in Kempton Park.

The joint team of SAPS and EMPD members attending to the complaint pursued the suspects’ VW Polo from Kempton Park up to Kanna Street in Benoni. The suspects were eventually cornered in Beach Street, Northmead Extension 4 following an exchange of gunfire with the police.

He said that during the arrest, police recovered two AK 47 rifles from the suspects’ vehicle, and said that the motive for the shooting and subsequent shootout with police is yet to be determined.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have information that could lead to the apprehension of the other suspect(s) is urged to contact their nearest police station or to call the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111. All information will be treated in confidence,” he said.
